Creating an Environment of Energy & Peace

Today, we are talking about where you spend your time, and how those places make you feel. What kind of energy are you receiving from your home, your office or workspace, and your vehicle? Look, we all live busy lives, and I understand how things get cluttered and disorganized: I am no stranger to a cluttered home or car, but I do recognize how this affects my overall energy, so we’re going to dig into this topic, and give you the tools to create spaces that you love.

HOME
Where do you spend the most time when you’re not at work? For most of us, it’s our home. I’m gonna ask you, is your home a place that you love to be, or does it drain you? Is it filled with things you love, or just “things” that have no meaning to you? How can you make your space reflect YOU and the energy you wish to bring into the world?

In the past, I didn’t understand how important this was. Then I started to make the kind of money that allowed me to build a bigger home and to hire someone to help me decorate it. I was all ready to go shopping – I was excited to bring new “stuff” into my environment, but my designer, Nikki Klugh, helped me to put the brakes on. She wanted to assess my current space, and help me figure out what I really loved before I spent a single penny on anything new. I am so glad she did that, because otherwise, I would have taken the same problem into a new space. We started in my kitchen, and I literally started crying over the stuff in there. I realized that I had no idea how to organize – everything was cluttered.

Then we took a look at my bedroom, where I had my home office, and my desk was a mess. Your bedroom needs to be a space where you can rest, relax and unwind. This is where you sleep – it’s your sanctuary. I know that sometimes we don’t have a lot of space, so we bring things in there, like a home office, but that is keeping us from recharging for the next day. Please try to find a different place to put your desk or workspace – anywhere but the bedroom. Your brain needs to associate that space with rest, not with work.

This isn’t about how big your space is, or how much money you spend on fancy decor – that doesn’t matter. What matters is how your space makes you FEEL. Is it organized, or are you moving things from one room to the next – things that you don’t even love? Do you actually need a new couch, or would a few beautiful pillows or soft throws make your existing furniture feel inviting and calm? I am not encouraging you to go out and spend a fortune on new things – I am inviting you to assess your space and find out which items are contributing to your peace and which items are draining your energy. Your home is where you seek relaxation and recovery from the stress of the day, but if you’re walking in the door and seeing piles of things that cause more stress, your home is not doing its job.

Take a look around your space right now. What are the things you absolutely love? For me, it’s pictures. I love to be surrounded by pictures of the people I love. They bring me energy and put a smile on my face when I come home and see photos of everyone that I hold in my heart. What is it for you? Do you love plants, books, or music? Maybe you love soft, fleece blankets and pops of color like I do? What are the things that you don’t like? Do you have dreary walls in boring colors that depress you? Consider painting a room. Find colors that bring you joy and make you want to spend time in that room. If you rent a place, and can’t paint, how can you bring the colors you love into your apartment? Maybe an area rug or print on the wall would be enough to brighten things up.

WORKSPACE
What does your desk look like? Can you organize it in a way that keeps your most important things nearby, but stores away the things you only need once in a while? What do you need to get your desk or workspace organized? Is your space large enough to work in? Is your chair comfortable, and does it allow you to work for long periods of time without making your body ache?

Take a look at the items on your desk, and decide what you need there. I like to have the smell of lavender in my office, so I have a candle that I like to burn in my workspace that makes it feel inviting to me. What smells make you feel energized and productive? Try incorporating those, whether it’s a scented candle, an essential oil diffuser or scented hand cream – try to make your work area smell beautiful to you.

VEHICLE
Are you ready to tackle this one? How does your car look? Now, I don’t care how expensive your car is. I’m asking how do you take care of your car? Is it obvious that you live out of your backseat, with shoes and changes of clothing back there? Are there fast food cups in the cup holders, or wrappers on the floor? Regardless of what you drive, this won’t make you feel good about your car. No matter what you drive, I want you to feel proud of your car every time you get in. Take the time to clean it regularly, and treat your car like an extension of your home, especially if you spend a lot of time driving.

For the next week, I want you to completely empty your car every time you get home. Take everything out: trash, grocery bags, your kids’ sports’ equipment, books and newspapers – clean it out! Every day. You will feel so good getting into a clean car whenever you leave home, and your friends and family will also learn to treat your vehicle with respect. I don’t care if you’re driving an old car or a new car – treat it like it just came off the showroom floor. Take that baby through a car wash – a car that’s dirty on the outside is more likely to get dirty on the inside. You will feel more in control of your life by having a clean car, inside and out.

I want to hear your takeaways. How are you taking control of your spaces this week? How does it feel to come into a peaceful, uncluttered room versus a chaotic one that is filled with stuff that you don’t love? How can you honor yourself in your home, your office and your vehicle by having only things that you love in them?

Remember, this is your family, your tribe, and we want to hear from you. Leave a comment below – I love reading them, and seeing how you are upleveling your life by implementing the tools we share in this community. Share your breakthroughs – tell us how you are creating beautiful, energetic, peaceful spaces. And don’t forget that I love you. I believe in you. I want you to live and work in places that bring you joy and peace. I’ll see you soon!

WOW! This is so amazing on what you are speaking about. I just moved into a lower level of a house that my girlfriend and I live in with everything I need, private entrance, full kitchen, washer and dryer and private bathroom. She wanted a one level house and I wanted a house of peace and I am designing my space with what I love in it.
Thank you for speaking on this Lisa giving me confirmation that I am doing it right.

Thank you Lisa! Such a great reminder. I’m travelling now and living in a short term rental that’s cute but not “homey”. I’m going to add fresh cut flowers to my table to give me that feeling (and smell!) that I’m missing while I’m here.
And tomorrow’s project – clean my damn truck!! Lol Thank you! I know it’ll take me about 15min to completely transform that feeling of dread I get when I get in it, to a feeling of control and power.
    Thank you!

I love the article. I spend a lot of time at home. I have tried to organize but when life kicks back in, everything gets unorganized. I try working with my personal space first and start slow.
