Busting the Abundance Myths

Hi, there! Welcome back to the place where we discover the tools we need to live our lives in abundance! And THAT is what we’re talking about today – abundance and the myths that surround it. What comes up for you when you hear the word “abundance?” Do you think of wealth? Do you have thoughts of unworthiness or that abundance isn’t for you? These are some of the things that come to people around this topic, and we’re going to dig deeper into abundance: what it is, and what it’s not, and how to really embody it in your life.

When I was growing up, nobody was talking about abundance. They used words like “prayer” or “wealth” or even “birthright,” but nobody was saying that we all have the ability to live in abundance. I know that I heard people say things like, “Wealth and prosperity is only for the chosen few,” or “You have to be born into the right circumstances. People like us don’t live that way.” Oh my gosh. If this is what people think about abundance, no wonder it seems so hard to get!

But we don’t get it – we embody it. And when we do, we can expand it in all areas of our lives, because abundance isn’t just about money. It’s a 360 experience that encompasses all areas of life: wealth and finances, health and wellbeing, relationships, spirituality, joy and energy. We have to believe it in our hearts and souls, and let the words that we speak move us in that way. If you constantly say that abundance isn’t for you, then you can bet that it will not be part of your experience.

So, let’s get to the truths about abundance by taking a look at some of the myths that surround it. I’m sure these will sound very familiar to you, and now is the time to get yourself into alignment with your abundance, and put these myths to rest, once and for all. We can live in the truth that abundance is who we are, and it is our right and responsibility to live abundantly for ourselves and for the good it will allow us to do in the world.

Myth #1: Abundance is only for Some People

This is a big one. And I used to believe this myself, because I was working to survive, constantly hustling to pay my bills. I had the mindset that wealth and prosperity were unattainable, and I just needed to keep a roof over my head and food on the table. This is not true! We are meant to thrive, not just survive. We may not experience abundance in all areas of our lives at all times, but when we shift our mindset to recognize that it’s all available to us, we can operate from a place of abundance instead of hustling to survive.

Have you ever heard anyone refer to the “haves” and the “have nots?” These are labels put on people, like a judgment coming down to decide who can be abundant and who cannot. This isn’t how it works! Regardless of your circumstances, your race, gender, socio-economic circumstances or geography, you were designed to be abundant. It doesn’t matter where the starting line is – we can all choose to step into our abundance. And when you start to choose it, you will see changes.

Now you know that some people will think this is crazy – they are looking around and saying, “Nobody from my neighborhood/family/workplace is abundant.” They are linking abundance to what they see externally, not realizing that if they love someone, and are loved in return, they are abundant. If they are grateful and joyful in their work, they are abundant. The key is to own that abundance – claim it! And the more you start to claim it, the more you will expand it. Abundance is available to everyone. And if you are looking for financial abundance, that can come, too.

Start working from a place of abundance. Instead of saying, “I just need to make X number of dollars to pay my bills,” you can try something like, “I love creating more abundance in my life, and I am happy to keep working toward increasing it.” How does each of these statements feel in your body when you say them to yourself? Changing your mindset to one of working into abundance rather than a mindset of running from scarcity can make a huge difference.

Myth #2: Abundance is Only about Wealth and Finances

This is a common misconception. When you hear the word “abundance,” what do you think of? If you automatically think of money, you are only getting one piece of the pie. Abundance is about so much more than just money. You can have abundance in your health, relationships, spiritual connection, and every other aspect of your life. Very few people get to the final season of their lives and wish that they had worked more or made more money. They always focus on their relationships: family, friends and romantic partners. They talk about wishing they had taken better care of their health; and they think about the enrichment of spiritual practices and connection to a higher power.

I loved talking to my grandmother in the few years before her passing. I wanted to make sure that she got everything out of life that she could, so I asked her, “Grandma, is there anything that you still wanted to do?” I was in a financial place to help her do what she desired, and I really wanted to know if there was any place she wanted to see or something she wanted to do.

I’ll never forget the words she shared with me. She said, “No, baby. I danced as much as I wanted to dance. And I laughed as much as I wanted to laugh. I traveled the world. I had a good time and took pictures everywhere I went. Lisa, I’m good.” Isn’t that beautiful? My grandma was abundant – not just in the financial sense – she lived, loved and laughed. She was abundant in her spiritual life, her relationships and in joy. I can’t think of a better way to finish life.

I have been with others in their final days, and they never listed off the number of businesses they had, how much money they made, or how many books they authored. They always looked at their spiritual life, their health and their relationships. I once sat with a new friend, and he said, “Lisa, I’m worth over 50 billion dollars. I spent my lifetime focused on making money, and now I spend all of my money trying to get my relationships and my health back.” He died within four years, and I don’t know if he was ever able to amend his relationships with his children. Abundance is so much more than your bank balance.

You see, abundance speaks to every area of your life. When you’re in a state of abundance, you’re in a state of overflow. Abundance is overflowing in all areas of life – not all at the same time – but in all areas. Your life won’t be perfect, but it will be abundant, which is far more desirable than struggling.

Myth #3: Abundance is Outside of You

Sometimes we think that we have to go looking for abundance. Where do I go get abundance? We have a Google mindset – we are so used to finding all of the answers from Alexa or Siri. But that’s not how abundance works. You can’t find it outside of yourself. You must embody it and expand it. You have the power to shift things in your life right now. But that’s the thing – we don’t get abundance. We are abundance. It’s here right now, but we have to decide whether or not to embody it. We get to choose whether or not to expand it. If you’re hunting for abundance, I’m sorry to tell you, you’re never going to find it outside of yourself.

Stop for a minute and think to yourself, “I am abundant. I am working to expand my abundance, which allows me to serve myself, my family and the world.” How does that feel in your body when compared to “I need to make this much money to pay these bills?” Can you feel the difference in energy around each statement? This is the first step in learning to encompass your abundance in your mind. You have to believe it, and remind yourself of your abundance every day. You could write an affirmation, prayer, or mantra to remind yourself every single day that abundance IS IN YOU. It can be as easy as a sticky note on your bathroom mirror or in your car that simply says, “I am abundant.” Abundance is your absolute birthright, and I want you to claim it right now.

Take the time and make the effort to expand the abundance you already have. Is there a relationship that’s good, but not great? What can you do to make that relationship more abundant? What do you need? What does the other person need? Have a conversation and make a plan to increase the abundance for both of you. Open up your communication and your abundance will expand. Be open to seeing the possibilities instead of just the problems.

So, let’s recap. In order to be more abundant, we have to have an abundant mindset. We need to work, love, live, worship and play with abundance. We need to let go of our limitations and recognize that abundance is our birthright. It encompasses all areas of our lives, not just our finances. Abundance is for EVERYONE, not just the chosen few. We are all worthy of abundance! Please remember to share your insights in the comments below – I love reading them! Lisa,
Thank You so much for thinking of me and sharing this wisdom. I’m so grateful and truly look at Abundance in another whole way! Abundance is my birth right! How profound. Growing up in a single parent household my Mother had 6 of us and No support from our Dad. I learned very early to be thankful and grateful for the small blessings. Now, in my latter years I’m trying to move knowing I can have more…More Abundance ❤️

Thank you for this word, Ms.Lisa! I am still learning how to operate from a true place of abundance. I used to operate from a place of lack. I learned to be grateful for the small things I had and saw how The Most High blessed me. For some reason I would always see glimpses of abundance, but now I know why…because the tongue in my mouth was not aligning with the tongue in shoe. They say when the student is ready the teacher appears

Radical messy action births the clarity. I know I need to move to the next level but I dnt have clarity on what that is. I need to make more money for sure.
